In short
Admitted to study in Spain and wondering where to submit your visa application? This guide explains the common Spanish requirements and directs you to the filing instructions and document lists for your country of residence. Choose your country before arranging an appointment: the competent consulate and filing route can vary even within one country.
Scope: Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Mauritania. Algeria has a separate ElWijha guide. This article mainly concerns studies lasting over 90 days. Last checked: 4 October 2026.
Part 1 of 5
1. Do you need a national study visa?
For studies exceeding 90 days, consult the national study visa procedure. For 90 days or less, check the short-stay rules applicable to your passport. See the Spanish consular study visa page for the general requirements.
Part 2 of 5
2. Prepare the common documents
Admission and enrolment
proof of admission to an eligible institution and programme and payment of applicable enrolment fees. The institution's letter should identify the course, its duration and the institution. Programme admission, language and university deadlines depend on the institution.
Language of instruction and evidence
check the programme’s teaching language and the level, tests or certificates accepted by the institution. Check the competent consulate’s list for any language evidence required in the visa application. IELTS and TOEFL can demonstrate English when accepted; no single test or level applies to every programme and country.
the current Spanish rule specifies at least one year of validity. Check the copies and pages required by your consulate.
Funds
demonstrate sufficient means for living expenses and return. The general student reference is 100% of the monthly IPREM; tuition funds do not count as living funds. If a relative supports you, prepare their financial evidence and proof of relationship as requested locally. Accompanying family members require additional means.
Health insurance
a policy with an insurer authorised to operate in Spain and benefits similar to the basic national health service package, covering the required period.
Medical certificate
check the wording, health conditions and legalisation requested by the consulate.
Criminal record certificate
for stays exceeding six months if you have reached the age of criminal responsibility, from relevant countries of residence in the past five years.
Translations and legalisation
official Spanish translation of relevant documents and legalisation or apostille for foreign public documents where applicable.
Special cases
minors, third-party sponsors, foreign residents in the country of application and accompanying relatives may need additional evidence.
When to apply: generally at least two months before the studies begin; a specific enrolment deadline or exceptional reason may justify an inability to meet that timing. Check the current consular rules and your own consulate's instructions. University dates are not uniform.
Part 3 of 5
3. Filing by country of residence
Morocco: identify your consulate first
Appointment arrangements differ by consular district. Determine the competent consulate for your residence and consult the Spanish Embassy FAQ on BLS appointments and that consulate's notices.
Rabat
consular appointment procedure. The consulate announces direct filing at BLS for university study applications without an advance appointment; certain non-university studies have an appointment category. Check your eligibility.
current appointment notice and document list (PDF). Studies under six months require the relevant appointment; for longer studies, the consulate announces filing without an appointment at BLS Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m., subject to the daily quota.
For other districts, use the Embassy's consular information to reach the relevant BLS centre. Do not apply Rabat or Tangier arrangements automatically.
Tunisia: email appointment for a national visa
Read the Embassy study visa page. Request the national visa appointment at emb.tunez.cit@maec.es. Check originals and copies, finances, insurance, medical certificate, apostille and translations. Keep the receipt and tracking code. Short-stay Schengen appointment arrangements are separate.
Consult BLS Egypt National Study Visa, its checklist (PDF), national application form (PDF) and medical certificate model (PDF). The Cairo list covers admission, six months of bank statements and sponsor income where applicable, accommodation, travel booking and extra documents for stays over 180 days or minors. Some figures and formulations in the PDF are older; compare them with the current Spanish consular conditions.
Jordan: submit through BLS
Read the Embassy page in Arabic and arrange filing through BLS Jordan. Check admission, passport, funds, insurance, translations and legalisation. Foreign residents and minors should check their additional requirements. The Embassy student guide (2025 PDF) is supplementary; follow current filing instructions.
Lebanon: appointment and personal filing in Beirut
According to the Embassy page, file in person by appointment at BLS Lebanon, fifth floor, Concorde Building (Verdun Center), Dunant Street, Verdun, Beirut. Prepare proof of legal residence in the consular district. Beirut's national visa arrangements cover residents in Lebanon or Syria under its consular jurisdiction.
United Arab Emirates: filing in Dubai
The Embassy page requires an appointment and personal filing at the BLS Dubai centre, not the Abu Dhabi centre. Prepare proof of local residence. Read the Embassy note (PDF) and page updates.
On BLS Saudi Arabia, choose 3 to 6 months or over 6 months and download the student checklist (PDF). It covers admission, tuition payment, previous studies, funds, accommodation and sponsorship. For non-Saudi residents it mentions Iqama, exit/re-entry documentation and an Absher report where applicable. BLS asks for filing at least 60 days before planned travel, while the general rule is two months before study begins. Plan early and recheck current fees and insurance.
Consult BLS Mauritania study visa and the Embassy-labelled checklist (PDF). It covers enrolment and payment, course details, qualifications, resources, accommodation, insurance, minors and documents for stays over six months. It calls for legalisation of certain documents at the Embassy before the BLS appointment. Check before payment: the PDF fee differs from the BLS page, and its EUR 30,000 insurance wording differs from the current student health insurance rule. Confirm these points with BLS or the Embassy and read current Spanish consular conditions.

4. Filing day and arrival
Organise originals, copies, translations and legalisations according to your local checklist. Ensure names, passport details and course dates match. Attend the appointment when required, pay current fees and retain the receipt. The consulate may ask for more documents. Do not assume a guaranteed decision date when purchasing travel.
If your authorised stay exceeds six months, apply for the foreigner identity card (TIE) within one month after entering Spain. See the Spanish consular page.

Frequently asked questions
Does admission guarantee the visa?
No. Admission is one part of the application; the authorities assess the other conditions.
Are IELTS or TOEFL mandatory for everyone?
No. Check the programme's language, evidence accepted by the institution and requirements of the competent consulate.
Is the financial amount identical for everyone?
The general student reference is 100% of monthly IPREM, subject to rules on duration, accompanying family and prepaid accommodation. Check the current index and local evidence requirements.
Is Schengen travel insurance enough?
Check that the policy meets the health insurance requirements for a study stay before buying it.
I live outside my country of nationality. Where do I apply?
Follow your residence and consular jurisdiction and prepare the legal residence evidence requested by that consulate.
ElWijha note: appointments, fees and checklists can change. Reopen the consulate and BLS pages before booking and before filing. Last checked: 4 October 2026.
