Want to study in the UK and unsure where to start? This guide covers choosing a programme, applying for admission, assessing qualifications when needed, applying for a Student visa and preparing to arrive. It is for applicants from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Morocco, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Oman, Tunisia and Iraq, explaining differences by university, nationality and country of residence.
Part 1 of 22
🧭 How do I choose a programme and university?
Decide whether you want a bachelor's degree, master's degree or doctorate. Search using the British Council course guide, then visit the programme's university page.
Check required qualifications, grades and subjects, English requirements, international tuition fees, start date and application deadline. If you need a Student visa, check the institution in the register of licensed student sponsors.
Part 2 of 22
📚 Does my qualification allow direct admission?
Each institution sets the international qualifications and requirements it accepts for each programme. Check its country page, if available. If the answer is unclear, send your qualification name and transcript to admissions. There is no single admission grade for every university or all ten countries.
Ask whether you qualify for direct entry or need a foundation pathway. For a doctorate, check the programme's qualification and research proposal requirements. See UCAS international entry requirements.
Part 3 of 22
📝 Where do I apply for a bachelor's degree?
Most full-time undergraduate applications are submitted through UCAS. Create an account, choose the entry year and courses, complete your details, qualifications, grades and personal statement, arrange the required reference and pay the application fee shown before submission.
You can choose up to five courses, with restrictions for certain subjects and choices. Follow the programme's instructions if it uses a separate application platform.
For entry from 2026 onwards, the UCAS personal statement consists of three questions about your reasons for choosing the subject, preparation through study and experiences outside education. The total limit is 4,000 characters including spaces, with at least 350 characters per answer.
See the UCAS application steps and the personal statement format.
Part 4 of 22
🎓 Where do I apply for a master's or doctorate?
Many universities accept postgraduate applications directly through their websites. Follow the application link and document list on the programme page. Requirements may include certificates, transcripts, references, a personal statement and English evidence, depending on the programme.
For a doctorate, check research proposal requirements and instructions about the supervisor or project. There is no single platform or document list for all postgraduate courses. See the postgraduate application guide.
Part 5 of 22
📅 What are the admission deadlines for 2027 entry?
Key UCAS undergraduate deadlines:
15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time
Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses.
13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time
equal consideration deadline for most other courses.
Some universities may accept international applications later if places remain, but do not assume this applies to your course. Postgraduate courses, tests and scholarships have their own deadlines. See official UCAS dates and deadlines.
Part 6 of 22
📜 Must I have my qualification compared before applying?
Ask the university first. A paid qualification assessment is not a universal requirement. A UK ENIC Statement of Comparability can explain how an overseas qualification compares with UK qualifications, but it is neither university admission nor proof of English proficiency.
See the Statement of Comparability service. Follow the university's requirements for copies, translation and any requested certification.
Part 7 of 22
✅ What do I do after receiving an offer?
Read the conditions and reply deadline. A conditional offer may require final results, English evidence or other documents. Submit these within the deadline and reply through UCAS or the university portal, as appropriate.
After meeting the conditions, follow the institution's instructions for issuing your CAS, including checks or tuition deposits. Deposit amounts and refund terms vary by university. See admission and offers.
Part 8 of 22
🎓 Who can apply for a Student visa?
The Student visa is for people aged 16 or over who meet the requirements for study with a licensed sponsor, English and funding. Applicants aged 16 or 17 need consent from their parents or legal guardian.
🏫 How do I move from admission to a visa application?
You must have an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor, then obtain the institution's Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) reference. Enter it in your visa application and apply within six months of receiving it.
Admission requirements and deadlines vary by institution and course. Check your university's website. See course eligibility and CAS requirements for visa rules.
Part 10 of 22
🗣️ Is IELTS compulsory for everyone?
There is no single compulsory test for every case. Visa English requirements correspond to B2 for degree-level study or above and B1 below degree level. A higher education institution may assess English itself for degree-level study or above, or an approved test may be needed.
Confirm the evidence accepted by your university and for your visa before booking a test. See English language requirements.
Part 11 of 22
💷 How much must I have for tuition and living costs?
You usually need the tuition fees for one academic year, up to nine months, as shown on your CAS, plus maintenance funds. Tuition already paid can be deducted when evidenced under the rules:
In London
£1,529 a month for up to nine months, or £13,761 for nine months.
Outside London
£1,171 a month for up to nine months, or £10,539 for nine months.
These are visa maintenance requirements, not a universal estimate of student living costs. The London category depends on where you study, not where you live. Part of a month is rounded up to a full month, subject to the nine-month limit.
When using bank funds, hold the required amount for 28 consecutive days. The end of that period must be no more than 31 days before the application date. See required funds.
Part 12 of 22
🏦 Can I use my parent's account or a scholarship?
You may use your own funds or a parent's funds subject to the evidence requirements, including their consent and proof of your relationship. Qualifying official financial sponsorship or a student loan may also be used. If funding is partial, ensure you cover the balance.
Local currency funds are converted to pounds at the prescribed exchange rate on the application date. There is no permanent equivalent in dinars, dirhams or riyals.
Start with a valid passport and CAS reference, then add documents according to your circumstances:
Financial evidence, if required.
English or qualifications evidence used for admission, when your rules require submission. Certificates and transcripts are not compulsory for every application.
A tuberculosis certificate, if applicable.
ATAS
approval if required for your subject and nationality. Obtain it before applying when necessary; see official ATAS guidance.
Parental or guardian consent and relationship evidence for applicants under 18.
Written consent from a financial sponsor when the rules apply to government or international scholarship agency funding that covered tuition and living costs during the specified period.
See the official document list and follow the checklist produced by your application. Documents in languages other than English or Welsh need a certified translation, including Arabic and French documents. See Student visa translation guidance.
Translations must be complete and verifiable, with confirmation of accuracy, date, translator's name, signature and contact details, or those of the translation company. For applicants under 18, consent covers the visa application, travel, living and care arrangements.
Part 14 of 22
🩺 When do I need a tuberculosis test?
A test is required when all three conditions apply:
You will stay in the UK for six months or more.
You have lived for six months or more in a listed country.
You were living in that country, or another listed country, within the last six months.
Residence history matters, not nationality alone. Use an approved clinic. The certificate is normally valid for six months from the chest X-ray date.
Financial evidence: nationals of the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Tunisia benefit from reduced financial document submission requirements. They must still meet the funds requirement and may be asked for evidence later. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan and Iraq are not on this list.
To qualify, apply from the country where you live and have a licensed sponsor. The arrangement can also cover some English and qualification evidence, but does not remove the underlying requirements or TB and ATAS certificates where applicable. See differential evidence requirements.
Tuberculosis: Morocco and Iraq are listed. The other eight countries in this guide are not listed, but earlier residence in a listed country may trigger testing.
Visa centre: use the centre for your country of residence and follow your application instructions. The centre links below open the official directory; select your country to reach the approved centre. Source: the UK government.
🇸🇦 How do I apply from Saudi Arabia?
Prepare financial evidence according to your circumstances, complete the online application and follow the Saudi Arabia visa centre instructions. If you have a scholarship, check the sponsorship document and its coverage.
Follow the UAE visa centre instructions. Reduced financial document requirements relate to Emirati nationality; residence in the UAE alone does not grant them.
Follow the Tunisia visa centre instructions. Reduced evidence requirements do not remove the need to have the funds. Submitted French documents need certified translations.
Complete the details and enter your CAS reference.
3
Pay the visa fee and required healthcare surcharge.
4
Submit documents as the system instructs.
5
Follow identity verification instructions
you may use the designated app or attend a fingerprint and photograph appointment.
6
Monitor your email and respond to requests for further documents or an interview.
Submit the visa application before booking the centre appointment. Check the centre website for its address, appointments and available services.
Part 17 of 22
💳 What are the visa fee and healthcare surcharge?
The Student visa application fee outside the UK is £558 at the review date. The student healthcare surcharge is £776 per year. The total depends on visa duration, which may exceed the course length.
⏳ When can I apply and how long does a decision take?
From outside the UK, you can apply up to six months before the course starts. The usual processing time is three weeks, starting after your fingerprint and photograph appointment, or after verifying identity and submitting the application and documents through the app if permitted. It does not start merely when fees are paid. Checks or an interview can take longer.
See application timing. Allow enough time to complete your application before your course starts.
Follow the decision letter to access your eVisa through your UKVI account. Ensure the travel document you use is linked to it. Check your details, permission dates and conditions before travelling, and do not travel before the visa start date.
Contact your university's housing service early. Compare university and private housing and booking, payment and cancellation terms. See the British Council accommodation guide.
After visa approval, arrange travel within your permission dates and the university's attendance deadline. Follow its enrolment and right-to-study checks. Prepare your passport, eVisa information and any requested documents. Keep evidence of arrival when needed.
Processes and deadlines vary by institution. Check your welcome letter and student portal. For an official example, see the University of Manchester right-to-study checks.
Part 21 of 22
❓ Can I bring my partner and children?
Not every student is eligible. One eligible group is government-sponsored students on courses longer than six months. The full-time postgraduate route requires a course lasting at least nine months; for courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, it must be a doctorate or research-based higher degree.
Where financial evidence is required, each dependant needs additional maintenance of £845 per month in London or £680 outside London, for up to nine months, depending on the stay and rules. Each has their own application, fees and relationship documents.
This depends on your programme, institution and immigration conditions. Check your recorded conditions; do not assume all students have the same permitted hours. Self-employment is not permitted under the Student visa. See visa conditions.
Before starting: check your programme's requirements and deadlines, then complete admission, CAS, funding, English, testing and translations as applicable. Follow the university's instructions and visa document checklist, then travel and enrolment instructions after approval.
