Where should an Algerian school-leaver, master's or doctoral applicant, English-language learner or vocational student begin? This guide covers the shared steps and the differences for minors, scholarship holders, accompanying family, students already in Australia, deferrals, course changes and refusals.
Important update: New rules took effect on 2 October 2026, particularly for applications made in Australia and including family members. Applications lodged before that date are assessed under the rules at lodgement. Read the transitional instructions.
Part 1 of 44
🧩 How should I use this guide for my situation?
Choose your course and obtain admission, then prepare language evidence, funding, insurance and your visa application. Read the additional sections relevant to research, English courses, vocational education, exchange, scholarships, minors or family. If you are in Australia or already hold a student visa, check eligibility and where you may apply before paying for another course.
📚 Is there one equivalence rule for Algerian qualifications?
Each institution assesses qualifications for its courses. Send your qualification title and transcripts and ask whether you qualify for direct entry or a pathway. There is no single admission average for every university. See the admission guidance.
Part 4 of 44
🎓 What are the steps with an Algerian school or university qualification?
Bachelor's
Ask for assessment of your baccalaureate, transcripts and required subjects; consider a suitable pathway if direct entry is unavailable.
Taught master's
Check recognition of your previous qualification, relevant subject, English and any experience or prerequisite requirements.
Transfer or credit
Request assessment before relying on a reduced duration or cost; the institution decides which credits it accepts.
🔬 What changes for a research master's or doctorate?
Check the research course first. A proposal and preliminary supervisor agreement may be required alongside qualifications and a CV. Ask whether admission and scholarship applications are separate and in what order to submit them. Supervisor and proposal requirements vary: start with the official application guide, then your university's research-course page.
Part 6 of 44
🗣️ What if I want English only, or English followed by university?
English only: Choose a registered ELICOS course, check level, duration and admission, then the appropriate visa route. See English-language study. Packaged study: Obtain offers showing the sequence and progression conditions, request a CoE for each course, and calculate insurance and funding for the relevant period. See university pathways. Do not assume an onshore new-visa application allows course packaging; the October 2026 rules and your exemption affect eligibility.
Part 7 of 44
🛠️ What if I want vocational training or a diploma?
Choose a VET course at TAFE or another eligible provider; check admission, English, fees and CRICOS registration. Prepare admission, CoE, student visa, funding, insurance and any placement requirements. Future university credit is subject to approval and stated conditions. See the VET and TAFE guide.
Part 8 of 44
🏫 What should a school applicant check?
Choose a school accepting international students and request assessment of year level, age, previous schooling and English. Complete visa and minor-welfare arrangements where applicable. Read school study guidance and check the school-sector age requirements on the subclass 500 page before accepting an unsuitable offer.
Part 9 of 44
🔄 Does an exchange student need a CoE?
For university exchange or semester study, follow the home and host institutions' international offices and obtain the required enrolment evidence. A school-exchange document does not replace a university CoE. Approved secondary exchange uses AASES instead of CoE, with welfare arrangements. DFAT or Australian Defence sponsorship may use an official support letter. See enrolment evidence by pathway.
Part 10 of 44
🏅 Does a scholarship remove the other requirements?
Prepare the award letter showing sponsor, amount, period and coverage; fund any gap in tuition, living costs, insurance or travel, and complete admission and your other requirements. University scholarships differ from DFAT/Defence sponsorship with its specific support documents. The foreign-government scholarship family exemption requires full study funding under the rules, not merely a university discount. See sponsorship documents and foreign-government scholarship rules.
Part 11 of 44
📝 Where do I apply for admission and what should I prepare?
Use the institution's application link and its own document checklist, which may include qualifications, transcripts, English evidence and additional documents. Check the course deadline, submit a complete application and monitor admission-office messages. Australia has no universal admission deadline or subject requirements. See application steps.
Part 12 of 44
✅ What happens after an offer?
Read the offer's enrolment conditions, fees, deposit and refund policy. Meet outstanding conditions, accept through the official process and pay through the official channel. The institution usually issues Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) after acceptance and the required payment. It confirms enrolment in a particular course and supports the visa application; an offer alone does not replace it on the ordinary route. See offers and CoE.
Part 13 of 44
🛂 Which visa is normally used?
The usual route is Student visa (subclass 500) for university, postgraduate and other eligible study. Obtain admission and enrolment confirmation, then apply. An applicant in Algeria uses the offshore route; someone in Australia must check the onshore eligibility section below. See the official student visa page.
Part 14 of 44
🗣️ Is IELTS compulsory and what score is required?
IELTS is not the only accepted test, and university admission requirements may be higher or require a particular test. Where visa testing is required, the usual IELTS minimum is 6.0, potentially 5.5 with at least 10 weeks of linked ELICOS or an eligible foundation/pathway, or 5.0 with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, subject to the rules. If attached at lodgement, the test must be within the previous two years; otherwise the two-year period is assessed before the visa decision.
Algerian nationality alone gives no exemption. Conditional exemptions include exclusively ELICOS, school, postgraduate research or a registered non-English course, plus secondary exchange and DFAT/Defence sponsorship. They also include eligible citizenship and passport of Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK or USA; eligible recent Australian study within two years; or five years of English-medium study in the countries specified in law, including South Africa. Previous English-medium study in Algeria alone is not automatically sufficient. Read scores, tests and exemptions.
Check Home Affairs' approved tests. Entirely online at-home tests are not accepted. For TOEFL iBT from 21 January 2026, choose Taking TOEFL for Australia when registering. University acceptance of evidence does not automatically establish immigration acceptance.
Part 15 of 44
🎯 How do I meet the Genuine Student requirement?
GS (Genuine Student) asks about current circumstances and ties, why you chose the course, institution and Australia, how study benefits your future and other relevant information. Answer in English, maximum 150 words per response, with supporting evidence. Explain gaps and course changes and disclose visa applications and refusals when asked. Use your actual circumstances rather than a generic copied statement. Study must be your main reason; a possible later eligible permanent-residence pathway is not itself negative under GS. See GS guidance.
Part 16 of 44
💰 How much funding must I demonstrate?
The funds route normally covers AUD 29,710 for 12 months of the student's living costs, first-12-month tuition less eligible proven prepayments, travel and any family amounts. Shorter periods are calculated under the rules; actual living costs can exceed the visa minimum. Evidence may be a financial-institution deposit, eligible loan, scholarship or financial support. An alternative is eligible parents' or spouse/partner's annual income in the 12 months before lodgement, evidenced by recent government documents: AUD 87,856 without dependants or AUD 102,500 with them, subject to the conditions. Read financial evidence rules.
You must also demonstrate genuine access to funds when evidence is required. Explain deposits and their source; a third-party sponsor may require relationship, support and access evidence. See student visa funding guidance.
Part 17 of 44
🏦 Do all Algerians have the same document checklist?
No. English and funding evidence depend on passport nationality, provider and circumstances. Use the official checklist tool, select Algeria as passport country and enter the provider or its code; also follow ImmiAccount's checklist. Evidence not requested at lodgement may be requested later. Prepare real, provable funding: absence of an initial document request is not exemption from the underlying requirement. See the evidence framework.
Part 18 of 44
🏥 What health insurance do I need?
Normally arrange Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your stay and eligible accompanying family through the university or an eligible insurer. Check dates and coverage. If arriving before the course, cover must start on arrival and continue throughout the stay, not merely from course commencement: see official coverage instructions. General travel insurance is not an automatic substitute. Basic cover usually excludes some services such as dental care and glasses. Read OSHC and insurers.
Part 19 of 44
📂 What belongs in the visa file?
Follow your individual checklist: passport and identity documents; CoE for each intended course on the ordinary route; insurance; requested English and funding evidence or applicable exemption evidence; GS answers and study/employment support; family relationship and minor-welfare documents; requested health checks and additional documents. Research applicants may need topic details and a CV. This is a preparation list; Home Affairs' checklist and the online application govern your file.
Part 20 of 44
📑 Must Arabic and French documents be translated?
Non-English immigration documents, including French documents, need English translations with the originals. Follow Home Affairs' translator rules and the institution's separate admission rules. Outside Australia, translations must show the translator's full name, address, phone and relevant language qualifications; in Australia include NAATI accreditation details as instructed. Read student application preparation. Translation does not replace a certified copy where one is requested; see document preparation on the student visa page.
Choose Student visa subclass 500 and enter personal, course, family and travel information.
3
Complete GS and attach required documents.
4
Review names, dates and answers, pay and submit.
5
Keep the application reference and receipt and monitor messages and further requests.
Upload through the specified process, retain copies and do not substitute email for uploading. See attachment instructions.
Part 22 of 44
💳 What is the visa fee?
Since 1 July 2026, student visa charges start from AUD 2,500 unless exempt. The application shows the final amount; family charges and insurance, examination, translation and chosen service costs may be additional. These are separate from tuition and living-funds evidence. See Study Australia's student visa fees.
Part 23 of 44
🪪 How do I provide biometrics in Algeria?
Follow your biometrics request letter rather than assuming everyone must attend a centre. Algeria supports Australian Immi App for eligible applicants. If the VLN starts with AUI, and you have a valid passport and compatible phone with camera, NFC, location and internet, follow the app's passport and facial-image steps. Successful submission normally removes centre attendance unless further steps are requested. If the VLN does not start AUI, or you cannot complete the app process, follow the letter's ABCC instructions. Check app eligibility and steps and the official centre list, selecting Algeria. The centre provides a service; Home Affairs decides the visa.
Part 24 of 44
🩺 Do I need medical examinations or police evidence?
Health or character evidence may be required depending on your circumstances; follow the actual request. A medical request provides a HAP ID and required examinations. Outside Australia, use an approved panel doctor or clinic. Follow examination arrangements and the approved clinic search for the examination country.
Part 25 of 44
⏳ When should I apply and how long will it take?
Apply early after admission, CoE and file preparation, leaving time for health, identity and further documents. There is no guaranteed decision deadline for all Algerians. Check processing estimates for your visa and stream; they reflect previous applications, not a binding deadline for your file.
Part 26 of 44
📅 What if a decision is delayed beyond my course start?
Contact the institution about deferral. If a new CoE is issued while the visa is pending, upload it promptly to ImmiAccount; the application is not automatically updated. See changing CoE during processing.
Part 27 of 44
👨👩👧 Can an Algerian student bring a partner and children?
For new applications from 2 October 2026, family inclusion requires an eligible exemption. Relevant cases include doctorate study, DFAT/Defence sponsorship and fully funded foreign-government scholarships. Pacific/ASEAN nationality exemptions do not arise from Algerian nationality. Special rules may allow family already included on a current visa to continue: an eligible onshore application, up to 12 additional months to complete the course, or provider default, subject to conditions. Applicant and included family must be in the same location at lodgement.
Family cannot subsequently join a student visa after grant through the subsequent-entrant route; there is no exemption to that route's closure. Declaring family information is not proof of their visa eligibility. Read current family rules and transitional provisions for applications lodged before 2 October.
Part 28 of 44
👶 What extra documents and costs apply to eligible family?
Prepare marriage/eligible relationship evidence, birth certificates, custody and consent where needed, insurance and requested health documents. Check ages, eligibility and the application checklist; not every relative is an eligible dependant. The 12-month funds route adds AUD 10,394 for a partner, AUD 4,449 per dependent child, travel and, where applicable, AUD 13,502 annually for each school-age child's schooling. Shorter periods and exemptions follow the rules; a scholarship's name alone does not waive schooling evidence. See the checklist and funding rules.
Part 29 of 44
🧒 What changes for a student under 18?
Provide parent/legal-custodian consent to the visa grant using form 1229 or accepted evidence; prove sole custody where applicable. A student still under 18 on arrival needs provider CAAW or eligible welfare arrangements using form 157N. The nominated guardian must be an eligible parent, custodian or relative aged at least 21, subject to conditions; lodge any required guardian 590 application with the student application. If turning 18 before arrival, complete sections 1–8 of 157N signed by the parent/custodian, with required visa consent. Do not arrive before welfare starts or change it without approvals. See minor-welfare guidance.
Part 30 of 44
🧑🧒 Can a parent accompany the student as guardian?
The dedicated route is Student Guardian 590, subject to eligibility. Check relationship, age, ability to provide accommodation/welfare, funding, appropriate insurance, examinations and documents. Guardian insurance is not automatically the student's OSHC. A current 590 holder can apply for another 590 onshore if eligible: see the new official factsheet. It is not a work visa; follow its conditions, including no work where 8101 applies, and do not leave the student without approved alternatives. See visa 590.
Part 31 of 44
✈️ What should I do after visa approval?
Read the decision, dates and conditions, then coordinate accommodation and arrival before course commencement with the institution. Book travel after visa grant; prepare passport, visa details, CoE and initial accommodation address. Check transit, baggage and arrival declaration rules. See the official travel checklist.
Part 32 of 44
🏫 What must I do after arriving?
Complete enrolment and attendance requirements and maintain enrolment, progress and insurance. Tell the institution your address within seven days of arrival and check conditions in VEVO. The usual limit is 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session, with exceptions including research master's and doctoral students after course commencement. Do not work before the course starts unless an applicable exception permits it; expected work is not a substitute for required funding. See student visa conditions and official work restrictions.
Part 33 of 44
🇦🇺 Can I make a new application while in Australia?
Since 2 October 2026, most temporary visa holders must apply offshore and be offshore at grant unless eligible for an exemption. An offer or CoE alone does not override location rules. For primary student holders, exemptions may include up to 12 additional months completing the same provider's course; DFAT/Defence, doctorate or school study; completion of the principal course followed by higher AQF study (higher education to higher education must be at a higher-education provider); specified school/non-AQF progression; or provider default. A dependent student holder becoming a primary student must apply and be granted offshore, without exemption to that conversion. Existing visas are not changed merely by the amendment. Read onshore eligibility. AQF is the Australian Qualifications Framework; DFAT is the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Part 34 of 44
⏰ Is a visa automatically extended when it expires?
No. Arrange the necessary CoE and insurance and check new-visa eligibility and permitted application location before your lawful stay ends. If offshore application is required, leave and apply under those rules; an invalid onshore application can affect status. An offshore application does not provide an associated Bridging visa. If a No Further Stay condition applies, check its effect and waiver eligibility; requesting a waiver does not remove the condition or guarantee eligibility under other rules. See application and status guidance and No Further Stay waivers.
Part 35 of 44
🏛️ How do I change provider or study level?
Obtain a suitable offer, request release where required and check visa effects. From 2 October 2026 to 30 June 2027, the non-school provider-transfer restriction period is 12 months of the principal course, with release cases and exceptions, returning to six months afterwards under the published rule. See ASQA transfer rules. Condition 8202 generally requires the same or higher AQF level than the course for which the visa was granted; an exception permits level-10 doctorate to level-9 master's. Before moving lower or from AQF to non-AQF, check whether a new visa must be granted and where to apply; do not assume an onshore university-to-VET change is allowed. Read visa conditions and the visa framework. Critical-technology research may require written approval under 8208 before study or a topic change beyond that evidenced in the application. Check the grant conditions and the regulations.
Part 36 of 44
⏸️ How do I defer or suspend study?
Request the appropriate provider procedure and evidence any medical or compelling circumstances. Check effects on CoE, visa and insurance; do not simply stop attending. See study-situation changes.
Part 37 of 44
🏚️ What if the provider closes or stops my course?
Keep enrolment, CoE, offer and receipts. Seek an alternative course or refund of unused tuition under the rules; TPS can intervene when a provider fails its obligations. See tuition protection. Provider default may permit a new onshore student application under a specific exemption; check its deadline and conditions rather than treating closure as visa extension. See the statutory exemption.
Part 38 of 44
📄 What if my research is finished but thesis marking continues?
Where the institution requires your presence during postgraduate thesis marking, its letter explaining the need may replace CoE for that particular case. Check new-application eligibility, location and other conditions. See study and thesis evidence.
Part 39 of 44
🧳 What about a short course or workplace training?
Visitor 600 may permit study or training for up to three months, but visa choice depends on purpose and conditions; where study is the main purpose, a student visa may be more suitable. See offshore visitor 600. Workplace occupational training may use Training 407, with separate sponsorship and nomination requirements; it differs from a provider's VET diploma. See visa 407.
Part 40 of 44
🔔 What if my passport, address or family circumstances change?
Read the reasons and any review rights and deadlines in the decision; not every offshore application has an appeal right. Visa charges are usually not refunded after refusal or withdrawal: see refund rules. Tuition refunds are separate; follow the institution's written agreement and applicable rules, explained in tuition protection guidance.
Part 42 of 44
❓ Is an agent required, and does admission guarantee a visa?
You can apply yourself. If using an education agent, verify institutional approval and fees; admission services do not automatically qualify an agent to give immigration legal advice. Admission and CoE are only part of the file and all other visa requirements remain. See application and assistance guidance.
Part 43 of 44
🎓 Can I stay to work after graduation?
Graduation does not automatically grant residence or work rights. Before visa expiry, check an appropriate pathway, including Temporary Graduate visa 485 if eligible. Conditions depend on qualification and circumstances; it is a separate application.
Before submission: Check course type, permitted application location and family eligibility, then match CoE or accepted alternative, language, funding, insurance and welfare to your checklist. Respond to additional ImmiAccount requests by their deadline. Institutions decide admission; Home Affairs decides visas.
