In short

Reviewed on 9 October 2026. Condensed English edition; the Arabic edition contains the detailed checklists and institutional references.

This guide is for Algerian students applying from Algeria. Admission, residence eligibility and the visa are separate decisions. Requirements depend on the programme and intake; consult the current official application guide before paying or submitting documents.

Part 1 of 7

Choose your route

  1. Bachelor’s after the baccalaureate

choose a Japanese- or English-taught degree, check recognition of your school qualifications, language requirements, EJU or other tests, and the university’s selection procedure. English-taught programmes do not automatically require EJU. Apply for admission, then follow the institution’s COE process.

  2. Transfer

ask the receiving university whether it accepts international transfers into your chosen department and year. Provide university transcripts, course descriptions and any requested school documents. Credit recognition and placement are decided individually; transfer is not automatic.

  3. Master’s

check degree eligibility, language tests, research proposal, references and entrance examination or interview. Contact a supervisor when the department requires it. A supervisor’s informal agreement does not replace formal admission.

  4. Doctorate

verify the required prior qualification, supervisor availability, research plan, funding, examination and programme-specific deadlines.

  5. Research student or non-degree researcher

confirm the exact admission status and residence category with the host. Some arrangements use Student status; unpaid academic research may use Cultural Activities. Do not select a visa category simply because your invitation says “research”.

  6. Japanese language school

confirm that the school can sponsor the appropriate residence process. Submit its requested education, language study and funding evidence. Attendance matters. Completing a language course does not guarantee university admission.

  7. Vocational school or KOSEN

check the institution’s own qualification, Japanese-language and entry-year rules. These routes are distinct from a university bachelor’s degree.

  8. Exchange

begin with nomination through your home institution and the host university’s exchange agreement. Confirm credit recognition, fees, length of stay and the host’s visa instructions.

  9. Short course, examination or academic visit

duration alone does not determine the permitted activity. Ask the embassy which category applies to your invitation and itinerary. A temporary visitor status must not be assumed suitable for a degree programme or paid work.

  10. MEXT

distinguish embassy recommendation from university recommendation. Follow the specific call, category, age and qualification rules, tests and selection stages. The Algeria 2027 call is closed; check the embassy for the next announcement. Preliminary selection, a university acceptance letter and final scholarship confirmation are different stages. Final awardees must follow the embassy’s dedicated visa instructions; do not assume that a COE or fee exemption applies without confirmation.
