Canada Study Visa for Algerian Students: Admission, Document Preparation, Application, and Arrival Guide

A study permit is the document that allows you to study according to its conditions. An entry visa, on the other hand, is the travel document placed in your passport when needed. When an application for a study permit submitted from outside Canada is approved, the appropriate entry document is issued as part of the same process, without a separate application or additional visa fee.

You typically receive an introduction letter to show upon arrival; this letter is not the study permit itself, which is issued at the port of entry after verifying that the conditions are met.

Most international students need a study permit. A program lasting six months or less may be exempt, provided the entry and residency conditions are met. This exemption does not automatically grant the right to work.

If the course is part of a longer program, or if you intend to pursue further studies, check the pathway before choosing to apply for a visitor visa. In Quebec, the full program duration is used to determine the need for a Quebec Acceptance Certificate.

Start with the government list of Designated Learning Institutions (DLI), and verify the institution, campus, province, and its number.

Then, review the program page at the institution to check for:

• The level, degrees, GPA, and required subjects.

• The language of instruction, accepted tests, minimum scores, and exemptions.

• Academic documents and how to send or verify them.

• Application deadline, study start date, and last registration date.

• Fees, deposit, and refund/deferral policy.

• The existence of a mandatory internship and its conditions.

There is no single admission average, unified deadline, or one required equivalency for all Canadian institutions. Ask the institution if it requires an assessment of your degree before paying for it.

Obtain a Letter of Acceptance LOA. Immigration communicates with post-secondary educational institutions to verify the authenticity of the admission; failure to confirm within the deadline may lead to a re-evaluation of the application. Upload the acceptance letter alone in its designated section.

No. Being on the DLI list does not mean that all its programs qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit PGWP. Check the program's eligibility, language requirements, and field of study, where applicable, before applying and paying fees.

Most applicants need a letter of attestation from the province or territory, called PAL/TAL. Contact the institution to learn about the procedures for obtaining it, and you may be asked to accept the offer and pay part of the fees.

There are exemptions, including for primary and secondary education, and from January 1, 2026, for master's and doctoral programs leading to a degree at a recognized public institution. Do not assume that all graduate diplomas or private institutions are covered by this exemption.

Other cases exist, such as certain exchange programs and vocational training in Quebec. If you are exempt, attach proof of exemption. And if you need the letter, ensure its validity at the time of application.

You typically need a Certificat d'acceptation du Québec (CAQ), then the federal study permit. Exemption from PAL/TAL does not automatically mean exemption from CAQ.

After admission:

1. 1

Check the possibility of applying according to your institution's application cap and exemptions.

2. 2

Create an Arrima account with details matching your passport.

3. 3

Complete the temporary selection application for studies.

4. 4

Pay the fees via Arrima within one hour of submitting the application.

5. 5

Retrieve the list of documents and file number, usually available within 48 hours of payment.

6. 6

Send the documents via Arrima within 15 days.

The announced fee for 2026 is 135 Canadian dollars. The announced processing time is 25 business days for 80% of complete files; this is not a guarantee for every application.

After acceptance, obtain a CAQ issuance attestation for the federal application; it also serves as the provincial letter where applicable. For residents in Algeria, proof of financial capacity is presented to Canadian authorities who assess it according to Quebec's criteria.

A distinction must be made between the university's requirement and the visa office's list. According to IMM 0152 updated in February 2026, the list for Algeria mentions:

• For French-language studies

  TCF Canada or TEF Canada.

• For English-language studies

IELTS General Training or CELPIP-General or PTE Core.

• Test results must be within the last 24 months.

The list also allows a letter from the institution where you completed your previous studies confirming that the language of your prior studies is the language of the proposed program. This proof should be uploaded in the Client information section.

Do not assume that university acceptance with a different test, or a university exemption from testing, automatically constitutes an exemption from language proficiency proof in the permit application. Check the current version of the list before booking the test; academic admission scores should be checked with the institution.

In the regular process, you must cover tuition fees, living expenses, and travel for yourself and accompanying family members, without relying on future employment in Canada. You must prove funding for the first year and outline a funding plan for the remainder of the program.

Outside Quebec, for applications submitted since September 1, 2026: The annual living expense threshold is $23,448 for a single student, $29,192 for two people, and $35,888 for three people, not including tuition and travel costs. Consult the official table for more family members.

Evidence such as six months of bank statements, an education loan, a scholarship, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), or documented support from another person can be used. GIC is not a general requirement for every student. And paying tuition fees does not replace proof of living and travel expenses. If there are restrictions on transferring funds, you must prove that you will be allowed to transfer those funds abroad to cover the costs.

Source: Proof of financial support and current amounts.

In Quebec, from January 1, 2026, annual essential expenses are CAD 24,617 for one person, 34,814 for two and 42,638 for three, in addition to tuition and round-trip travel. Essential expenses include housing and settling-in costs, food, daily transport, health and hospitalization insurance and other necessities.

The Algeria checklist requires evidence of income, available funds and their source. Depending on your funding, prepare an employment and salary letter, pay slips or business or pension evidence; relevant CNAS, CASNOS or CNR records; a bank certificate and six months of transaction statements; transfer records and tuition payment receipts.

For third-party funding, include a signed commitment, proof of your relationship and reasons for support. Add the sponsor's photo identification, occupation, income evidence, number of dependants if any and amount of support. For an organization, include registration and appropriate funding evidence.

For a scholarship, obtain an official letter stating amount, duration and conditions, and evidence covering any shortfall. Follow IMM 0152 instructions for entering the scholarship in IMM 1294's funding section. A balance alone does not explain where the money came from.

Combine the general requirements with those applicable to you: valid passport and identity page plus travel pages requested; acceptance letter; PAL/TAL or exemption evidence and CAQ when needed; funding evidence; latest diploma and program transcripts; language evidence; explanation letter; medical examination evidence when applicable; family, custody or lawful foreign residence documents as applicable; any additional documents requested.

The Algeria package includes IMM 1294 for studying from outside Canada and IMM 5707 for family information. Conditional forms include IMM 5646 for custodianship, IMM 5409 for a common-law union and IMM 5476 for a representative. Include IMM 5257 Schedule 1 when the background answers identified in IMM 0152 require it.

Download current forms from the official Algeria package. IMM 5483 is a checking aid: an online application generates a personalized checklist, and you do not need to upload the general PDF checklist itself.

Explain your reasons for studying in Canada and choosing the program, and your understanding of student responsibilities. Organize it around your education and its connection to the new program; institution, language and level choices; changes of field or study gaps; funding and costs; and anticipated benefits after studying.

This is a suggested structure, not a mandatory government template. Keep the letter consistent with evidence and application answers and demonstrate that you meet temporary residence conditions.

Documents in English or French do not need translation simply because they are Algerian. Documents in another language, including Arabic, need an English or French translation.

Under the IRCC guide, a translator who is not Canadian-certified must supply an affidavit under the published rules. Applicants and their family members cannot translate their documents. Include the source document and copies requested and follow certified-copy requirements when applicable.

Do not add apostille or consular legalization as a universal requirement without a specific request from the institution or authorities: translation, certification of copies and authentication of declarations are different procedures.

Follow your online application's photo field. Published photograph specifications include a photo taken within six months, facing the camera with a neutral expression, light background and no digital alteration; a frame at least 35 × 45 mm and head height between 31 and 36 mm. Religious head coverings are permitted when facial features remain visible.

Algeria is on the relevant country list for a Canadian stay longer than six months if you lived or stayed there for at least six consecutive months during the year before arrival. An examination may also be needed for work or placements involving health care or child care.

Book an IRCC panel physician. An upfront examination is possible. Bring your passport, medical reports, medication list and glasses if applicable, and ask the clinic whether photographs are needed.

The physician sends the results; for an upfront examination upload the completion document. Costs are separate and results are normally valid for twelve months. A police certificate is supplied when requested, rather than being a universal attachment to every study application.

Start on the official application page, select applying from outside Canada and follow the route offered for your situation. Create the required account, answer accurately to generate the checklist, download current forms, complete them and upload evidence in the appropriate fields. Group legible pages within allowed formats and sizes; include Algeria requirements and applicable exemptions; review, sign electronically, pay and submit. Keep the application, receipt and file number and monitor messages.

If an interactive PDF such as IMM 1294 is required, download it to a computer, open in Acrobat Reader and use Validate when required. Do not confuse electronic signing with paper instructions. Paper applications are limited to published exceptions, including a disability preventing online application and certain refugee or stateless identity or travel documents.

The study permit fee is CAD 150 and biometrics CAD 85 per person when required, totaling CAD 235. A CAD 170 family biometrics cap may apply subject to the rules. Add CAQ, medical examination, translations, language tests and visa centre services when relevant. Institution fees are separate.

If required, wait for the biometric instruction letter (BIL), then book at the Canadian visa application centre through VFS Algeria. Most applicants aged 14 to 79 need biometrics; previous valid biometrics may be reused, with validity usually ten years. The usual deadline is thirty days from the letter; follow the date in your own instructions.

Booking the appointment itself is free. Check the centre's passport, BIL, booking confirmation and consent instructions. The centre collects biometrics and transfers documents; Canadian authorities decide the application.

Apply once admission, provincial documents and the file are ready, considering the institution's latest enrolment or arrival date. There is no single deadline for all Canadian study applications.

Check IRCC's processing-time tool for a study permit from outside Canada and Algeria. The displayed time is an estimate, not a guarantee. Monitor requests for documents, interviews or medical examinations and meet their deadlines. Update contact details and report relevant changes. Some doctoral applicants qualify for faster processing: check the official graduate-student route.

Each accompanying person needs the appropriate application and status, relationship evidence and family funding. Accompanying a student spouse does not automatically confer work authorization. Eligible categories include spouses of certain master's students in programs at least sixteen months long, doctoral students and specified professional or eligible programs.

Students under seventeen arriving without a parent or legal guardian need a custodian in Canada under the rules. A custodian may be requested from age seventeen until provincial majority. IMM 5646 declarations are notarized: the custodian's section in Canada and the parents' section in their country. Check travel documents and consent from a non-accompanying parent as applicable.

Follow the passport request letter to submit through the authorized centre, then check the visa, personal details and validity dates. Keep in hand luggage: passport and valid entry document; port-of-entry introduction letter; valid acceptance and CAQ if needed; funding and any documents the office told you to carry; medical evidence where applicable; and minor and accompanying-family documents.

For a deferred start, get institution approval, an updated acceptance letter and a valid introduction letter. Changing institutions after approval while outside Canada requires a new study permit application under the instructions. On arrival answer the officer's questions, receive the permit and check its information and conditions.

Arrange housing and health coverage with the institution before travel. Coverage varies by province and institution: do not assume it is free or begins immediately. Verify the start date and whether extra insurance is needed for a gap.

A housing reservation or paid ticket is not a universal document to add without checking the personalized list, although it may be requested in a specific case. Living and travel costs must still be included in funding.

Eligible students may work off campus up to twenty-four hours per week during classes and full-time during officially scheduled breaks when conditions are met. Do not start before your program begins; follow permit conditions and obtain a social insurance number (SIN). Language-only or preparatory courses do not automatically confer off-campus work eligibility.

Since April 1, 2026, eligible postsecondary students no longer need a separate co-op work permit for required student work placements; eligibility conditions remain. Secondary students still need one. This update is newer than the internship paragraph in the February 2026 Algeria checklist.

Respect your institution and permit conditions and make progress in studies. A postsecondary institution change requires the applicable new-permit process: check it before transferring.

If you need an extension, apply at least thirty days before expiry under the guidance. Finishing early may end permit validity ninety days after completion even if the printed date is later. Permit validity does not replace a valid entry document for travel and return.

Read the reasons and address them with suitable evidence before reapplying. Published reasons include inadequate funding or acceptance, or not convincing the officer of the study purpose or departure at the end of the authorized period.

Check provincial documents on reapplication: a new PAL/TAL may be needed, while a valid CAQ may be reused subject to its rules. Sending the same file again does not guarantee a different decision.

Algerian citizenship alone is not on the official eligible-country list reviewed. Speaking French is insufficient; do not automatically apply the pilot's funding amounts or exemptions. Someone with another eligible citizenship should check all requirements.
