Planning to study in Sweden? This ElWijha guide takes you from university admission and preparing your residence application in Algeria to the decision and travel. Follow the undergraduate and master’s steps first, then consult the separate sections for doctoral studies, short courses, family and special situations.
Part 1 of 20
🧭 Which route fits your studies?
Situation
Route
Bachelor’s, master’s or university exchange lasting more than three months
Higher education residence permit.
Doctoral studies
Doctoral permit; a researcher permit may apply with a hosting agreement.
Short studies not exceeding 90 days
Schengen visa when required, rather than a university residence permit.
Eligible European mobility with a permit from another participating country
A mobility notification may apply.
Eligible non-university education or secondary exchange
Other studies route, depending on the programme.
Admission to a course does not automatically qualify you for residence. Official study routes.
Check the university’s subject requirements, teaching language and documents.
3
Create an account and rank your choices.
4
Submit documents and pay the application fee by the deadlines.
Bachelor’s applicants
The Algerian baccalaureate specified in the country instructions can meet general requirements; programme-specific conditions still apply. Submit the diploma with the provisional success certificate or baccalaureate transcript as instructed, identification and language evidence. Arabic originals require official English or Swedish translations. University qualifications do not replace secondary-school documents, but may help establish specific requirements. Algeria: bachelor’s instructions.
Master’s applicants
A Licence/Bachelor’s degree, and the DES listed officially, meet general criteria. Submit your degree, all semester transcripts, language evidence, subject-specific documents and identification. A French degree certificate needs no translation under these admission instructions; an Arabic one does. Transcripts in either Arabic or French require official English or Swedish translations alongside originals. Names and birth dates must match; explain discrepancies using official documents. Algeria: master’s instructions.
Final-year students or diplomas not yet issued
Universities may consider final-year applicants with completed semester transcripts, an official final-year enrolment certificate and language evidence. If you have finished but await the diploma, provide a full transcript and an official certificate confirming completion and pending diploma issuance. Fulfil university conditions; academically conditional admission is not automatically final admission for a residence permit. Final-year instructions.
Part 3 of 20
🗣️ Step 2: Meet the language requirement
English studied at an Algerian secondary school alone is insufficient. An approved test or qualifying university studies can establish eligibility; a letter stating English was the teaching language is not automatically sufficient. For English 6/English Level 2, IELTS Academic requires at least 6.5 overall and 5.5 in each section. TOEFL, PTE and Cambridge alternatives have their own rules. IELTS General Training is not accepted. Programmes may require a higher level; Swedish-taught programmes have separate language conditions. Language rules.

These are admission dates, not a single residence application deadline. The second round may leave insufficient permit processing time. Doctoral and direct applications follow the institution’s announcement. Official calendar.
Part 5 of 20
💳 Step 3: Pay the required fees
Applicants subject to fees pay SEK 900 per application semester, not per programme. It is non-refundable. Use an accepted card or the bank details and reference provided; the full amount must arrive by the deadline. Application fee.
The university sets tuition and the first instalment deadline. Pay it directly before applying for residence and confirm receipt. “Conditionally admitted” may remain displayed after payment; check whether outstanding conditions concern tuition, language or academic qualifications. With a scholarship, confirm coverage and exemptions. Tuition and residence.
Part 6 of 20
💰 Step 4: Prepare financial evidence
Applications submitted in 2026 require at least SEK 10,656 per month throughout the requested period. A twelve-month example is SEK 127,872 for living expenses, separate from tuition. On 13 October 2026 the official study page did not list the 2027 amount. For a 2027 application, use the amount published for that application year, not the study start year.
Your bank statement lists the holder, bank, issue date, balance and currency.
It is issued within four months before the requested permit start date.
Funds must be accessible
assets frozen throughout the permit period do not qualify
Include central-bank or equivalent permission to take funds out of the country if required in your case.
Free meals or housing from the institution or an eligible exchange organisation may reduce the requirement: in 2026, SEK 2,960 monthly for food and SEK 4,736 for housing.
Funding source
Evidence
Parents or relatives
Funds transferred to an accessible account in your name; a private guarantee alone is insufficient.
Minor applicant
A guardian’s account may qualify under the route’s rules.
Scholarship
Provider, amount, period, payment dates and living-expense allocation.
Tuition exemption only
Separate living-expense evidence.
Multiple sources
Accepted sources may be combined.
A future job offer alone is insufficient. Funding rules.
Passport copies show identity, validity, issuing country, signature if there is a field, machine-readable code and permission to reside elsewhere. Stamp pages may be requested. The permit cannot outlast passport validity. Passport instructions.
Full-time university studies normally mean 30 credits per semester. Distance learning does not qualify. Studies under one year require comprehensive insurance covering medical care, hospitalisation, emergency dental care and medical repatriation; check university coverage. Permit conditions.
Part 8 of 20
🖥️ Step 6: Submit your application
1
After final admission and required payment, open the Swedish Migration Agency’s application service.
2
Enter your information and appropriate embassy.
3
Attach complete, clear documents.
4
Pay any applicable fee and retain the case number.
The online service requires adulthood, an email address and an accepted payment method. Higher education permit fees: SEK 1,500 per adult and SEK 750 per minor. Certain scholarships qualify for exemptions. Refusal does not result in a refund. Application service and fees.
If online submission is unavailable, use the paper form and coordinate submission and payment with the responsible section before visiting. Sign it; minors follow guardian-signature instructions. Paper form.

Part 10 of 20
⏳ Step 8: Track the application
Check My page and email and answer supplementary requests. Passport verification may be digital or in person; a digital check does not replace card fingerprints and photography. Interviews are not identical requirements for every applicant. No decision date is guaranteed. Report changes to study start, passport or family situation. If processing exceeds the university’s last arrival date, coordinate with it and report any deferral. Application tracking.
Part 11 of 20
✈️ Step 9: Travel and arrival
With an ordinary Algerian passport requiring an entry visa, wait for approval and the residence permit card before travel. Carry the card and valid passport; an approval message is not a replacement. Follow embassy collection instructions. On arrival complete university enrolment and attendance. Consult the Tax Agency about population registration and your personal identity number according to duration and status; these are not automatically issued with the permit. After approval.
Part 12 of 20
🔬 Doctoral applicants
Apply to the institution and choose a doctoral or researcher permit according to your hosting agreement and situation. Provide final admission, the institution’s supplementary certificate following the Agency checklist, salary/scholarship or other funding and insurance if applicable. Do not automatically use the bachelor’s/master’s route. Doctoral route: the checklist PDF appears under “Supplementary certificate of doctoral studies”.

The centre’s page says a paper photo may be unnecessary when photographed during biometric enrolment; follow your appointment instructions. Document accommodation, return plans and requested additions. This insurance differs from university residence insurance.
Passport: issued within ten years, two blank pages and at least three months’ validity after visa expiry. Apply no earlier than six months before travel under Schengen rules. Normal processing is 15 days; the local checklist states up to 45 days after embassy receipt. Processing time is not authorised stay.

Part 14 of 20
👨👩👧 Accompanying family
Eligible spouses/partners and children under 18 can apply together or later. Later applications require more than three months remaining on the student’s permit. Published additional monthly support: SEK 4,440 for a partner and SEK 2,664 per child. Provide passports, relationship and financial evidence; for children, birth and custody documents, consent from a parent staying behind, or sole-custody/death documents where applicable. Family route — Form 135011.
From 1 October 2026, comprehensive family insurance applies to stays of at most one year. For a child not shared by the couple, rules concern the parent also being the legal guardian. This update did not change maintenance requirements. Use the newer announcement where wording differs. Family update.
Part 15 of 20
🧩 Special situations
Language and other studies
Independent language courses do not qualify under other studies. Distance learning does not qualify for study residence. Some non-university programmes qualify; secondary studies are limited to cases such as IB or organised international exchange. Minors need guardian consent. Other studies.
European mobility
An eligible programme and suitable permit from a participating country may allow notification at least 31 days before entry, for up to 360 days. Ordinary exchange is not automatically mobility under these rules. Mobility notification.
Additional citizenship or special residence status
Check the appropriate route. Simply living in another European country does not automatically remove the Swedish long-term study permit requirement.
Part 16 of 20
💼 Work and address notification
Bachelor’s/master’s permits granted from 11 June 2026 normally allow at most 15 hours of work weekly during studies. That limit does not apply in June, July or August; programme/institution-related activities have specified exceptions. Earlier permits have transitional rules until renewal. Excess work can affect your permit. New rules also require address notification within 30 days, except after completed population registration. A promised job does not replace initial funding. New study rules.
Part 17 of 20
🔄 Renewing your permit
Apply before expiry, no earlier than four months beforehand. Provide continued admission, passport, funding, insurance if needed, results and Tax Agency income summary even if you have not worked. For permits granted from 11 June 2026, normal full-time progress is 37.5 credits in year one and 45 per later year. Provide medical evidence where illness affected results.
Master’s to doctorate requires a new route. Changing programme requires new admission and applicable tuition. Duration may be one or two years depending on institution, studies and passport. Timely submission allows you to stay while awaiting the decision; check your card before leaving and returning. Extension rules.
Part 18 of 20
🎯 After graduation
You may qualify to seek employment or explore a business after fully completing an eligible university programme of at least two semesters. Apply before permit expiry and meet funding and insurance requirements. It is not automatic: up to one year after bachelor’s/master’s, or one year to 18 months after doctoral studies, subject to conditions and passport. A work permit requires a separate application. Post-study route.
Part 19 of 20
❓ If refused
Read the reasons, appeal instructions and deadline in the decision. An appeal does not automatically authorise travel or remaining in every situation. If in Sweden, follow the decision’s departure instructions. Refusal and appeals.
Part 20 of 20
✅ Final checklist
Route matches study type and duration.
Admission, language and documents meet deadlines.
Final acceptance and payment or exemption confirmed.
Funding covers the requested period and family if applicable.
Translations, originals and appropriate insurance attached.
Accurate data and appointments following Algerian procedures.
Programme conditions come from the university; financial amounts depend on application year. Do not add apostille, a paid flight or other documents as universal higher-education residence requirements unless requested in your case.
