Study visa for Spain from Algeria: official steps and documents
Have you been admitted to study in Spain and need to prepare your visa application from Algeria? This guide covers the general steps for studies lasting more than 90 days. Check the institution separately for programme admission rules, required qualifications, language scores and deadlines.
Scope: This is a guide to the national study visa. For a course lasting 90 days or less, consult the short-stay visa instructions of the competent consulate.
1. Obtain admission and proof of enrolment
You need acceptance by a recognised educational institution in Spain for an eligible full-time programme and proof of payment of the required enrolment or registration fees. The admission document should identify you, the programme and its duration. Foreign secondary school qualifications may require homologation or another university access process for undergraduate admission, depending on the institution. This is not a universal visa document. Admission does not guarantee a visa.
2. Prove the language of instruction
The requirements depend on the programme and the consulate with jurisdiction. The Spanish consulate in Oran asks for the Instituto Cervantes DELE diploma at B1 for undergraduate Grado courses taught in Spanish and B2 for masters and doctorates taught in Spanish. For programmes taught in English, it asks for an official English-language certificate, without naming IELTS as the only acceptable test. An institution may accept IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge or another form of evidence and set its own score. Check both its admission page and the consular page before booking a test. Oran’s wording is not automatically applicable to applications in Algiers.
3. Identify the consulate responsible for your wilaya
Your place of residence determines whether the Spanish Consulate General in Algiers or Oran is responsible. Check the official lists of their consular districts and read that consulate’s national study visa page.
4. Prepare the study visa file
The exact number of copies and any additional documents are specified by your consulate. In general, prepare the originals and copies of the following:
• A completed and signed national visa application form and a recent photograph that meets consular specifications. The Oran consulate publishes an official PDF form.
• A valid passport. The Spanish Ministry of Migration specifies a minimum validity of one year.
• The admission document and proof of payment of enrolment fees. For Oran, check whether the institution’s digital signature is required on the admission document.
• The language certificate required for the course and the consulate, and proof that you reside within the consular district where you apply.
• Sufficient funds for living costs and return travel. The general reference for the student is 100% of the monthly IPREM for each month of stay. At the review on 3 October 2026, the published monthly figure was €600. Funds reserved for tuition are not counted as living resources. A special rule applies if accommodation is paid in advance for the whole stay. Confirm the current IPREM when submitting.
• Health insurance from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain, with coverage equivalent to the basic services of the Spanish public health system, valid for the intended stay.
• A medical certificate meeting the health condition in the visa instructions.
• For stays over six months, if you have reached the age of criminal responsibility, a criminal-record certificate from countries where you lived during the preceding five years.
• The consular fee, paid as instructed at the time of application. Minors should also check parental or guardian authorisation requirements. The consulate may request further evidence.
5. Apostille and translation of Algerian documents
Where required, foreign public documents need an apostille or legalisation and an official translation into Spanish. The Apostille Convention entered into force for Algeria on 9 July 2026. The Spanish consulate in Algiers announced the end of its former consular legalisation service for documents issued by Algerian authorities. Check the process for each document and obtain the apostille from the competent Algerian authority.
6. When and where to apply
The general rule is to apply at least two months before studies begin, unless a justified reason prevents this. There is no single deadline for every institution: check the start and enrolment dates of your programme.
For the Algiers district, the study visa page says applications are lodged at BLS Algiers without an appointment, Sunday to Thursday, 11:00 to 14:00. However, the same consulate’s official contact and opening-hours page says national visa applications have been lodged at the consulate itself without an appointment since 14 December 2025. These official pages conflict about the location. Confirm directly with the consulate before travelling.
For the Oran district, the application is submitted at BLS Oran according to its procedure. Keep your submission receipt and any tracking code.
7. Decision and collection
The Ministry of Migration factsheet mentions a legal period of one month to notify a decision, subject to the conditions for lodging at the competent consular post. Do not treat it as a promised travel date. The consulate may ask for additional documents. On approval, the factsheet states that the visa must be collected within two months of notification. If refused, read the written decision and appeal instructions; the Algiers consulate page mentions an administrative appeal within one month of notification.
8. After arriving in Spain
If the authorised stay exceeds six months, personally apply for the foreigner identity card (TIE) within one month of entering Spain at the police office responsible for your residence. For an authorised stay of no more than 180 days, the visa covers the period and the TIE is not required in that case.
Frequently asked questions
Is IELTS or TOEFL enough? There is no one certificate for every student. The institution decides which tests and scores it accepts. Oran requires an official English certificate for English-taught study and specifies DELE B1 or B2 for Spanish-taught study as described above.
Does everyone show the same amount of money? The general reference is 100% of the monthly IPREM for the period of study, with living resources assessed separately from tuition.
Do I need an appointment? Follow your consulate’s current instructions. Algiers and Oran differ, and two Algiers pages conflict on the submission location.
Can I use any BLS “Student” checklist? Make sure it covers a national study visa for more than 90 days. Some student lists concern short-stay Schengen visas.
