Russia may be an option for continuing your education, starting a career or setting up a business. ElWijha explains the essentials of studying, scholarships, working and residency, alongside housing, insurance and payment arrangements, to help you prepare for your journey and life there.
🛂 Entry and Visas
Entry requirements vary according to nationality, passport type, the purpose of your trip and its duration. Check the instructions of the Russian diplomatic mission responsible for your country of residence to choose the appropriate visa. Visa-free entry for a visit does not automatically grant the right to work or undertake long-term studies.
The unified electronic visa is available to certain nationalities for specific purposes, including tourism, private visits, business and certain events. It allows a single entry and is valid for 120 days from the date of issue. However, the stay must not exceed 30 days from entry, within the visa’s validity period. Both arrival and departure days count towards this limit.
This visa is not intended for university studies or employment. Entry and departure must take place through border crossing points approved for this scheme.
🎓 Studies, Scholarships and Student Employment
Choose your university and subject, then check admission requirements, the language of instruction, documents, translations, legalisation requirements and fees. Most programmes are taught in Russian. Some universities also offer English-taught programmes and preparatory courses. If you choose a preparatory year, confirm the requirements for progressing to your chosen degree afterwards.
Funding opportunities are available through the Russian government quota. Applications follow selection procedures and deadlines specific to your country. This scheme includes tuition funding and an allowance under the applicable rules. Check housing, insurance, travel and living expenses before relying on this support.
If you need a student visa, coordinate with the university to obtain the required entry invitation, then follow the instructions of the relevant consulate. Before paying fees, also check whether the qualification will be recognised in the country where you intend to work, particularly for regulated professions.
An eligible international student studying full-time on a state-accredited programme may work during their free time without a separate work permit, provided they give the employer proof of their student status. Confirm your eligibility with the university: this exemption does not automatically cover every course or study format, and does not automatically continue after graduation.
💼 Employment and Starting a Business
Employment procedures depend on nationality, entry arrangements and residency status. For those who need a work visa, the process generally involves an official invitation requested by the receiving organisation, together with any required permits. A contract alone is not sufficient in every situation, so check your requirements before starting work.
Some people entering without a visa need a work authorisation called a “patent”, while certain categories are exempt. Depending on its type and the holder’s status, a document authorising employment may impose restrictions relating to the region or employer.
To register as an individual entrepreneur, a foreign national must provide proof of the right to temporary or permanent residence, alongside other documents. These requirements should not be applied to every company structure: check with the registration authority for the requirements relevant to your chosen activity.
🪪 Residency After Graduation and Bringing Your Family
Some students may qualify for a temporary residence permit for educational purposes when studying full-time at a state educational or research institution, on programmes specified by law and subject to the applicable accreditation requirements. A separate application is required. The permit covers the eligible study period and an additional 180 days after it ends.
After completing the eligible studies, permit holders may apply for permanent residence within three years, subject to the relevant conditions. This is an application deadline, not permission to remain without valid immigration status.
To bring your family, ask the university, employer and consulate about the appropriate route for each person, their permitted stay and any right to work. A private visit visa does not automatically grant permanent residence, and your visa does not automatically cover your family members.
🏡 Housing, Healthcare and Daily Life
Prepare a budget covering studies, housing, utilities, food, transport, insurance and initial settlement costs. Ask the university to confirm the availability, price and conditions of student accommodation. Check that your insurance is valid in Russia and review its coverage: services excluded from the policy may require payment.
After arrival, coordinate with the university or accommodation provider to complete migration registration at your actual address, extend your visa or stay when necessary, and fulfil the medical examination and fingerprinting requirements applicable to your situation. Deadlines vary, so follow instructions early and report any changes to your address or passport.
Visa and Mastercard cards issued outside Russia do not work in Russian shops or ATMs. Check in advance how you will pay fees, access your money and transfer funds between banks. Do not rely on a card from another network without confirmation from its issuer.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a single deadline for university applications?
No. Deadlines vary by university, programme and admission route. For scholarships, check with the organisation responsible for selection in your country.
Does permanent residence grant Russian citizenship?
No. Permanent residence and citizenship are separate statuses, each with its own requirements and procedures. University admission or an employment contract does not automatically grant citizenship.
