Choosing a suitable programme or securing a job offer is only part of preparing for Ireland: residence permission, budgeting and accommodation also shape your plans. ElWijha brings together essential information to help you make a decision that suits your circumstances before travelling.

🛂 Entry and residence

This article concerns the Republic of Ireland, which is outside the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa alone therefore does not grant entry. Northern Ireland follows United Kingdom rules.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality, the purpose of your trip and its duration. You may need a C visa for a short stay of up to 90 days, while studying, working and joining family follow separate routes.

A visa does not guarantee entry. If you are subject to registration requirements and will stay for more than 90 days, you must register your residence permission within the time allowed and obtain an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card.

Consult the official Irish immigration portal to check the requirements for your circumstances.

🎓 Study and scholarships

Choose your programme and institution, then check qualification and language requirements, documents, fees and application deadlines through Education in Ireland and the institution’s website.

Students from outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland who are subject to student immigration rules must check that their programme appears on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP) or among the eligible programmes offered by institutions authorised to use the TrustEd Ireland quality mark. Details are available on the official Irish immigration study options page.

Scholarships vary by institution and programme. The 2026 Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship (GOI-IES) offered €10,000 for one year, together with a full waiver of tuition and registration fees for that year, for eligible programmes at levels 9 and 10. Check the conditions and deadlines for your intended application cycle with the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

💼 Work and entrepreneurship

Most nationals from outside the European Economic Area need an employment permit, unless exempt. Requirements vary according to the occupation, salary and position, and residence requirements must also be met.

The government’s employment permits page explains the available routes and their conditions. To compare your qualification with Irish qualifications, you can use the service provided by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). Regulated professions may require separate professional authorisation.

Your right to establish a business depends on your residence permission. The Start-up Entrepreneur Programme (STEP) provides a route for innovative projects, subject to conditions including at least €50,000 in available funding and a proposal that undergoes assessment. Having the funds alone does not guarantee acceptance. Details are available on the official Irish immigration programme page.

👨‍👩‍👧 Joining family

Eligibility depends on the resident’s type of permission, the family relationship and financial resources. An ordinary student residence permission does not provide a general right to family reunification, although exceptions exist for specific categories.

Check the route applicable to your circumstances on the Irish immigration page for joining family.

🏠 Accommodation, health and services

Budget for rent, food, transport, bills and insurance, as well as tuition fees. Start looking for accommodation early, check the contract before paying, and do not rely on an uncertain future job to cover your needs.

Students from outside the European Union need appropriate private medical insurance. You may also need a Personal Public Service Number (PPS Number) for tax and certain public services. This number is separate from your residence card and does not grant the right to work or reside in Ireland.

Consult Education in Ireland for information on accommodation, living costs and student medical insurance, and the Irish government portal for PPS Number application requirements.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Can I work while studying?

A valid Stamp 2 student permission allows you to work up to 20 hours per week, and up to 40 hours per week during June, July, August and September, and from 15 December to 15 January, without engaging in business or self-employment. Stamp 2A study permission does not allow employment.

Consult the official Irish immigration rules on working while studying.

Can I stay after graduation?

Eligible graduates may qualify for Stamp 1G graduate permission for up to 12 months with a level 8 qualification, or 24 months with a level 9 qualification or above, subject to conditional renewal after the first year.

This permission allows graduates to work full-time, but not to be self-employed or establish a business. Check the eligibility and application requirements under the official Third Level Graduate Programme.

Does student residence count towards naturalisation?

Residence under Stamp 2 student permission does not count as reckonable residence for naturalisation. Treatment varies according to the type of permission, and naturalisation is subject to other requirements.
